Troubleshooting Guide for Focusing Twinstar Telescopes

Congratulations on buying one of our great telescopes.  If you are new to astronomy or simply have not used a telescope in a while, you may find this guide helpful.

Telescopes are delicate and precise optical instruments.  They should be handled with care at all times.  In addition, celestial objects are quite far and focusing on them with a telescope may take some practice, but with patience, you should be adept at it in no time.  When you first use your telescope, we recommend using the largest eyepiece provided to you and not using the Barlow lens.  The larger the eyepiece, the less your telescope will magnify the object which you are observing.  It is helpful to start with the largest eyepiece, as it will be the easiest to focus.

Take your telescope out during the daytime on a clear day.  Be sure never to look at the sun, either with your telescope or naked eyes.  With the largest eyepiece inserted into the focuser, choose an object on Earth to view and point the open end of the telescope at the object.  Once the target is in your sights, turn the focusing knob on the side of the eyepiece slowly in order to bring the target into focus.  Practice with this eyepiece until you are adept at focusing on objects of various distances.  Once you can do this, you can move to a smaller eyepiece to practice more during the daytime.

Once you are adept at focusing on objects during the daytime, you can repeat this process on an evening with a full moon and clear skies.  As you become more skilled at focusing your telescope, you can move on to smaller and smaller celestial objects.  With enough practice, you'll be an astronomy pro!
